Sweet Sixteens Assignment three

After discussing it with each other our group decided on one Universal definition for leisure. We believe leisure to vary person to person but must consist of freedom to do any activity for its sense of satisfaction. The activities may vary from just relaxing after a busy day or recreation with some friends. Whatever it may be that brings leisure to you, make time for it.

The goals of the ARC are to provide recreation along with leisure to the student body along with faculty and staff. They hope to give students everything they wish to have and to do this they survey the students and what they tell the arc they do everything they can to make it happen. The agency is funded through tuition from each and every student along with all the private memberships they have. Along with students must pay fees for any extra classes they wish to participate in. This agency can serve the whole University of Illinois community along with those who live in the area. Anyone who wants a place to workout, or relax at a pool or participate in recreational activities with friends can benefit from the Arc. The Arc can compare to the golf course that Stephen talked about along with LA Fitness who Jim talked about. The golf course because it’s a place in which people can go to relax and enjoy themselves with a group of friends. Also LA fitness because it’s a place where people can go to work out or enjoy themselves. Also The Champaign Park District and the ARC can coincide as the ARC does many outdoor activities such as hiking, and camping just as the Champaign Park District offers. The arc doesn’t really fit with any of the other agencies directly, but leisure they all provide so they all can connect in that manner.

They key program elements that set the ARC apart from all other agencies it how many things it offers for everyone. Almost anyone can find something to do there. Where other people may only offer one area of programs, the ARC offers anything from sports, to aquatics, even cooking classes! The strengths the ARC has, as a leisure service provider is it offers both traditional leisure services along with outdoor leisure activities. The weakness is they don’t really market it all that well, or so I believe. One would really have to try to find out if they offer the program to know they have it. But the fact they offer all of these great things to everyone and give everyone the opportunity to participate and learn. Yes, the agency does fulfill its goals and does all it says it will do. My example for knowing this is no one has ever had a bad thing to say about the ARC besides it can get too crowded. The fact it is too crowded shows that they are successful in all they do.

LA Fitness is a private-membership agency that was created for the betterment of all people. Their main goal is to enable people to live a healthy lifestyle. LA Fitness gives all people the opportunity to exercise in a variety of ways. LA Fitness pushes fitness as a way of life. Being fit allows a person to be healthier, live longer, and live a better quality of life while living. LA Fitness is private-membership, which means it is funded by the monthly fees and dues that each member pays. Along with the membership fees, LA Fitness offers a wide variety of personal training and different programs and classes. This variety of activities bring in a good chunk of LA Fitness' profit. LA Fitness has a very diverse customer base. It is a nation wide chain with over 100 locations, so it is safe to assume that LA Fitness caters to an age range of highschool kids all the way to grandparents. And there is definitely no discrimination between different races and ethnicity's.

There are many different workout facilities throughout the United States and LA Fitness is just a small blip on the radar. So in order to attract big numbers LA Fitness must make itself unique and an attractive possibility. LA Fitness goes about doing this by offering personal training memberships, fitness classes, yoga, pilates, martial arts, swimming, and various leagues for their members to participate in. I think this variety of activities that LA Fitness has to offer serves as a key strength in setting it apart from local and national competitors. As I mentioned earlier LA Fitness is a national chain. As a national chain, they have superior facilities than the local smaller gyms have to offer. They also offer low and affordable prices. Being able to have superior equipment than local gyms is a great recruiting tool for future membership. Along with that comes a glaring weakness, LA Fitness is spread across the nation and always looking to open another location which causes them to be understaffed. They try and keep their budget as much in the positive's as possible and you can definitely tell during peak hours at the gym. The maintenance staff was short and that caused for the bathrooms to dirty easier and allows for equipment to be left out of place. This is a weakness because it makes LA Fitness look unattractive to future possible members and becomes and inconvenience to current members who are trying to get an efficient workout in.

LA Fitness fits into the leisure-service delivery system as a private-membership organization. It provides people with recreational and social activities. The book provides six different views of leisure and LA Fitness definitely promotes many of these forms of leisure. Some of the activities are performed for their own sake. I think it is also a symbol of social class but a different interpretation than the book. Joining a fitness club and being active show others that you care about your body and health. While exercising at LA Fitness is an activity that takes place during unobligated free time because you choose to go there. And working out at LA Fitness can give a person a sense of personal fulfillment and self-enrichment. I can speak from personal experience when I work out I have a better outlook on life, I feel better about myself and I have more energy. LA Fitness provides the capability to live a leisure filled life and definitely fulfills it position in the leisure-service delivery system.

The Shedd Aquarium is a tourism agency that attributes a big part to the leisure service delivery system. The goal of this agency is to provide leisure to the American society and in a different form. It shows that there are other ways to have leisure other than working out, playing games, or playing a sport as some of the other agencies provide (such as the ARC, LA Fitness, and others). That’s what’s great about this whole leisure service delivery system. There are a variety of agencies that pertains to a variety of personalities and preferences for leisure. That’s the beauty of it all! Besides what would leisure be if everything was the same and agencies all had the same definition for leisure? It’ll be pretty boring huh.
What makes the Shedd Aquarium such a great choice for leisure is that it is aimed to serve all individuals and age groups. And that’s one of its strengths, which I will further discuss a little later. Every agency needs to be funded somehow to keep it up and running. Similar to some of the other agencies and organizations such as LA Fitness, Stephen’s Service Organization: Pancakes for Poverty, and others, the Shedd Aquarium gets its funds from a combination of admission charges, fundraisers, and concession and gift sales.
The key element that sets this agency apart from others is that it ties the beauty of nature in with leisure. It gives people the best of both worlds; leisure and the appreciation of nature. As I said before one of the strengths of this agency is that it serves all age groups opposed to fitness and/or sport based agencies like LA Fitness or the ARC or the Champaign Park District. This allows different groups such as families or friends to go out to enjoy leisure together. When it comes to measuring weakness, I can’t really think of any because this agency does its part in the leisure service delivery system and does it well. If I had to pick one I would say it’s not having more Shedd Aquariums! Overall, I would say that this organization fulfills its purpose and goals. My reasons for this are evident throughout this whole blog. In addition, it has more than 2 million visitors a year and is one of Chicago’s top attractions as well as the most visited aquarium. That has to count for something right?! I just wanted to end by saying I really enjoyed this class and blog assignment.

The Champaign Park District serves the city of Champaign and the surrounding areas and offers so many different ways to spend leisure time that there is something for everybody to do. The CPD supports the definition of leisure as an individual decision. They offer programs for people who want to exercise individually, for those who like to work out with a team and for everybody in between. It is similar to LA Fitness in that it offers a way to promote healthy living to the members of the community. However while LA Fitness offers gym membership as its only recreational means, the CPD offers everything from outdoor parks to a skate park to a boating center, among other things. The CPD revolves around family and community as equally as it revolves around helping individuals find a great environment to exercise in. When compared to Campus Rec, the two are found to have a great amount of similarities. Campus Recreation has two gym facilities as well as outdoor playing fields and "adventure recreation," things like canoeing and rock climbing. The two both offer so many activities, however because Campus Recreation is a campus resource, it is mostly geared toward college students, although it is open to the public. The Champaign Park District caters to families because it provides the community with recreation and the community consists of many families.
The Champaign Park District is a public agency so it obtains most of its money from membership fees, but it also receives funding from money donated to The Champaign Parks Foundation, an organization set up by the park district with the purpose of managing donations that are made to the Champaign Park District.

The University of Illinois Athletic Department is a sport management agency in the leisure field. The athletic department's mission statement is: "To have the highest quality athletic program in all sports that allows the University of Illinois teams to compete for championships in the Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association." In other words, the goal is to win. This agency is funded in a couple different ways. First, it is funded by the University. Some of the huge amounts of money we pay to come here goes to the athletic program. The second way the athletic department gets money is from itself. The athletic department brings in tons of money from the big name sports like men's basketball and football. These sports bring in giant revenues that help fund the athletic department and the school itself.

This agency literally serves millions of people. It serves the athletes, the students of the University, and all the fans world wide. This is the major difference between the University Of Illinois athletic department and a Cardinal Fitness. There are so many different people to please and there is so much money going in and out. The strength of this agency is the huge amount of money it pulls in. The athletic department is one of the school's primary sources of income. The University would be so much different without sports, both socially and academically. The school would be short on money and maybe not be able to provide all the top tier programs that we have become accustomed to here at Illinois. Socially, we would not feel as connected with our peers if we did not have the common goal of cheering on our teams and beating our rivals. It is a huge part of the atmosphere here. One weakness of the athletic department is the lack of a personal relationship between it and those it serves. Once again, there are so many people that its impossible to know everyone and have a personal relationship with them. This is something you may be able to get at a Cardinal Fitness; a personal relationship. Every time you go you may be greeted by name at the door. The athletic department just cannot do that.

I believe the agency has fulfilled its goals in the past, but recently it has not done too well. The teams are always competitive, but none of the flagship programs has won a championship in a while. Hopefully, we will be able to reverse that trend this season...Go Illini!

Pancakes for Poverty is part of a new form of leisure where people can find enjoyment in doing something they love, while helping out others. Its something that focuses not only on one particular individual, but encourages people to think of others and their needs as well. Like the Shedd Aquarium, Pancakes for Poverty breaks the mold of the stereotypical forms of leisure and really adds a lot of diversity to leisure delivery systems.
One key aspect about Pancakes is its members’ passion for serving and helping others. Every organization and agency has a way of differentiating itself from the competition and Pancakes’ differentiates itself through its passionate service to others. Their drive to offer a service opportunity as an exciting social outlet and enjoyable experience is one that not every RSO on campus can offer. They have created a great culture within their organization that enables their members to really embrace their work. The Shedd Aquarium similarly has differentiated itself from many other similar agencies such as a zoo or the ARC by keeping its exhibits relevant to their various target audiences.
Surprisingly the Shedd Aquarium and Pancakes have more in common than what you would expect! While the Shedd tends to draw more visitors in a given year, approximately 2 million, than Pancakes they both tend to attract a similar audience. Both attract a lot of volunteers as well as young couples. Interestingly, the Shedd has been a facility that not only promotes education on various aspects of sea life, but has been a place for couples to go on romantic dates. Similarly service agencies, like Pancakes for Poverty, have seen young men and women connect through their work. The fact that these people often have similar interests and spend a considerable amount of time together creates a perfect environment for fostering relationships.
While I don’t really see a whole lot of “weaknesses” in Pancakes for Poverty, if there is one thing they can improve on I would have to say it would be their size. Pancakes is a young and growing organization that aims at having an impact on the national level, but for the time being they are helping out local food banks. Their focus on making everyone’s experience an exciting one coincides with their effectiveness in creating an environmental that makes them a wonderful leisure delivery system.

The Stone Creek Golf Club is a recreation agency that plays a big part in the leisure service delivery system. The main goal of this agency is to provide the general public with an escape from the craziness that goes along with life. There are many other ways to experience leisure, but golf provides peace and tranquility, along with competitiveness and social time. Golf may not be for everyone, that is why there are other places to experience leisure, such as The ARC, LA Fitness, or even Shedd Aquarium. Leisure provides so many outlets for people to enjoy their favorite activities, there is no end to the leisure service delivery system.
Like the Shedd Aquarium, Stone Creek is a place of leisure that anyone can enjoy if they like the outdoors. Although this type of outdoors is different than that of hiking. Many people of all ages and genders enjoy a nice relaxing round of golf. Also, like the other leisure agencies (LA Fitness, Shedd Aquarium, Pancakes for Poverty), Stone Creek receives their funding from memberships, green fees, golf outings, and other special events.
The main asset of Stone Creek as a leisure agency is that is meant for pure enjoyment and relaxation. Men and women all over the world go out and play golf to simply take a break from the rest of their lives, and why not on a beautiful day? People can experience leisure in that of relaxation and also of the enjoyment of nature. Why not spend a day with people you enjoy being around and also the beautiful outdoors. One weakness that I can think of is that if some people do not enjoy playing golf because they are not as good as they believe they should be, they may not enjoy going out and playing for fun. They would then become stressed. That is the only weakness that I could come up with. I believe that the Stone Creek Golf Club does a superb job of portraying a top notch agency in the leisure delivery system. Stone Creek is one of the most popular and highly rated golf courses in Central Illinois. I would like to say that I greatly enjoyed gathering information and learning more about one of my personal favorite golf courses in Illinois. Sidney (overman2)

So in conclusion, some way some how all of our agencies provide leisure to the greater good. People say life flies by and you need to stop and slow every thing down every now and then or life will be gone before you know it. It’s kind of like the Kenny Chesney song "Don’t Blink." Well each and every one of our agencies though different in their own ways gives people that opportunity to slow life down and enjoys the time we have here. Time is precious, especially the free time. So our advice is to use it wisely. How does one use it wisely? We just listed many agencies above that are great starts. So relax, slow life down, and live a life of leisure.

Assignment 2

Introduction:

The Stone Creek Golf Club located in Urbana is a very important leisure spot in the area. Stone Creek is one of the highest rated golf courses in Central Illinois. Whether you are experiencing Stone Creek for the first time, or for the twentieth time, you will not cease to be amazed by the glorious fairways and beautiful creeks play a part in keeping this course a true getaway. Because golf is a sport played by many ages, employment options seem to be endless in some aspects of the field. Therefore, this golf course is a great place to attain leisure and employment. Always an escape from reality.

Background:

Stone Creek was created by Tim & Dick Nugent. They wanted to make Stone Creek a place to escape reality. They wanted a true golfer to have they experience they wanted. Therefore they created the gently rolling sloped fairways along with the beautifully stone lined creeks and ponds. Stone Creek is the type of golf course where anyone can come out and be who they are, they don’t have to pretend to be someone they’re not, they can escape all of the everyday stress. Whatever you imagine your dream golf course containing, your imagination will become a reality when you arrive at Stone Creek Golf Club.

Employment:

In regards to employment opportunities at Stone Creek, there are not many higher level management positions. Although, looking for a job in the leisure department, that is what you may be seeking, there are other job opportunities available. There are many job openings in maintenance, bar tending, waitressing, managing the pro shop, waitressing, and even cart crew. Many of these jobs may not seem as luxurious as the management positions, but the best way to prove yourself is to start in the lower positions, show your hard work and leadership abilities, and then be promoted to the high level positions. One thing that may help someone to attain a job at Stone Creek, is to have some golf in their background. It is not required, but is definitely beneficial.

Trends:

Golfing has been a trend for many many years. I do not see the number in the golf community decreasing any time in the near future. Golf is a life long sport. One may start playing as a young child and decide that it helps them to relieve stress, which can be beneficial when that same person becomes an adult and needs an escape from reality. If anything, the golf community will continue to grow due to the fact that more teenagers have begun picking up the sport as a form of hanging out with friends and family. The golfing community will continue to increase, therefore always having a need for golf courses and the leisure that it provides.

Definition:

The definition of leisure in terms of a golf course is simply a place to get away from all the busy schedules and stress of every day work. Many people find it relaxing to come to a quiet and serene place to just let all of their thoughts escape their mind and take it easy. Many find it more enjoyable and relaxing to play with a group of friends and create a little competition. The main thing is that it provides an escape from the every day stress that everyone is subjected to. Whether you come out to relieve stress, or hang out with your friends and play a round, your imagination becomes a reality once you enter the Stone Creek Golf Club.

Synopsis:

Thinking back to all the rounds of golf I have played over the years at Stone Creek Golf Club, there has never been an outing that I did not enjoy. I always found myself more relaxed than I thought I could ever be on a golf course. I had the chance to experience playing competitively for my high school team, and also just playing a round with my dad. I was equally relaxed playing for my team as I was playing with my dad for fun. I have talked with many other people who have also enjoyed their rounds of golf at Stone Creek. Each person had said they have never had a bad experience. They all agreed that they have always felt at home, relaxed, and stress free. Many people believe that in order to enjoy golf they need to be good. One of the main ways to have fun and relax is to play with friends that don’t play often...they provide the entertainment for the leisure activity. I believe that at one time or another, everyone should try the stress relieving game of golf at Stone Creek Golf Club.

Assignment 2

INTRODUCTION
The Activities and Recreation Center, better known as the ARC is simply what the name implies. It is one of the largest on campus recreation centers in the United States listing at 34,000 square feet. From our guest lecture Michael Danielson, we learned that 10,000 people walk through the doors at the ARC on high point days and that it also houses around 750 jobs. This is a great place for both recreation and leisure.

BACKGROUND
The ARC is simply a place where all University of Illinois students and staff can go for free to work out, relax at the indoor or outdoor pool, have fun on the rock-climbing wall, and enjoy many other opportunities. The ARC used to be a building named IMPE but then was completely renovated after listening to student to now be what is known as the ARC. Almost everything in the ARC and anything done to it comes from student demands. They want the students to decide what they want and then deliver it. As said the ARC is an on campus recreation facility, and is one of the largest in the nation.

EMPLOYMENT
If the ARC offers nothing else that you may want it can definitely offer you a job. The ARC employs 700 to 750 students along with 60 other professionals in top positions. For students they offer many different positions, including internships. Some positions they offer are positions in event management, facility management, intramural activities, personal trainers and many others. Some of the internships they offer in communication, marketing, and human resources. They also offer professional positions and graduate positions. They way to get one of these positions is usually by attending an informational meeting, then filling out an application with a resume, and finally being interviewed. Also from what I have heard from those who have came to talk to my classes, they look for employers who are seeking a major dealing with the position being applied for so they can get experience. I also got the chance to ask Michael Danielson how does one get his foot in the door, he replied "I would say there are two initial steps that would you would take for employment. One, I would attend an information session since that introduces the values, opportunities, and positions that are available with Campus Recreation. Secondly, I would think as a RST major what makes you stand out from the crowd. Leadership experiences, unique customer service background, service, etc."

TRENDS
When it came to finding out about the ARC's trends I am sure I could have found some myself by surfing the web, but I took this opportunity to ask a fellow friend and employee of the ARC about the trends she has noticed lately. Dealing with the ARC itself she informed me that the fitness classes are starting to take off. She tells me its 50 dollars a semester and it allows you to enter into any of the classes. The most popular are cycling and palates, or any morning class for that matter. Another thing that’s starting to get more popular is the outdoor recreation. She told me that a lot of people are now utilizing the rock climbing wall and setting up trips to take two-day outdoor wilderness trips or go hiking or camping with large groups of friends. A trend that never changes popularity is the swimming pool, a great way to go relax and enjoy a friends company. She couldn’t really think of any negative trends. When I asked her why campus rec is really booming she informed me that it was because it has something to offer for each and every person. Whether it be wheel chair basketball, or martial arts, or just about anything one can think of. So people are building such big facilities to accommodate for all of this as well.

Interview answers provided by Katie Freeman, ARC employee.

DEFINITION
I also was able to contact Michael Danielson the AD of human resources after he spoke with our RST class and asked him what he believed to be the ARC's definition of leisure to be. He replied by saying the definition is definitely "having relative freedom to pursue different opportunities be they physical, mental, social, spiritual, for personal growth, development, individual." I think this is perfect to what my definition would have been. I would have said the ARC gives students the ability to get away from their busy life styles and studies to take a moment and relax at the pool, or get the workout one wants in, or do anything one can do to find leisure. The main benefit the ARC provides is the ability to go to a place with so much opportunity available. It provides work, a place to exercise, outdoor recreation, and a place to go with your friends and compete in sports.

SYNOPSIS
Through my own experiences at the ARC over the numerous times I have been there I was always very fond of it. I always was able to go and get my mind off of things for a long time whether it was wile I was playing basketball with friends or working out. It was a place for leisure for me. I learned over my two interviews with Katie Freeman and Michael Danielson that they also are very fond of working for the ARC. Katie described a few of the benefits the ARC brings to her "I gain experience working with hundreds of different people, and I get to work on my social skills and face to face contact with customers. It also gives me a great job experience to put on my resume for when I apply to future jobs. By working here I gain many connections with some very prestigious people." To me that about wraps up the pros of being able to work in an environment like such as Campus Recreation, and also you get the benefit of knowing your helping hundreds of people each day. The only con I could think of is the beginning jobs are not all glamour when you first start for maybe all you will be doing is sliding a card through a slot to make sure people are able to walk in, and also the long hours attached. It fits the Campus Recreation leisure service delivery by providing all these great opportunities such as the outdoor recreation, the pool, the intramural sports, and everything else. Also being one of the biggest in the nation I believe ours to fulfill the leisure service delivery better than anyone’s in the nation.

Stephen's Service Organization: Pancakes for Poverty

Introduction:

Leisure trends are always evolving and part of the recent evolution in how people spend their leisure time has seen an increase in the participation rates of service organizations on college campuses. Pancakes for Poverty, an RSO on campus, is part of that trend.

Background:

Pancakes for Poverty is an RSO on campus that is dedicated to helping the needy by donating money to the Eastern Illinois Foodbank. Pancakes for Poverty donates to a local food bank to help fight hunger, but they are about more than just fighting hunger. In regards to some of his personal aspirations for Pancakes Alex said, “I also have personal goals as President of the club. My major goal within the club is to create an environment where kids are unafraid to do something kind of “kooky” and allow them to be themselves. Pancakes for Poverty is just as much about empowering students to fight apathy around campus and in their own lives as it is about making money.”

Employment/ Member Opportunities:

This organization only asks for two things from its members a desire to help others and a passion for sharing that desire with others. There are currently four leadership positions; the president, internal affairs VP, external affairs VP and finance VP. However Pancakes encourages leadership and involvement amongst all its members. In order to increase involvement in the club Ronning said, “Our goal is to have many subcommittees to allow everyone a creative outlet.”

Current Issues and Trends:

There is a general trend in growing membership within Pancakes that reflects a social movement towards greater participation in service oriented organizations. Pancakes membership numbers are currently hovering around 40 which is a drastic increase from last year. Just as Pancakes numbers have grown over the years so have the number of service oriented RSO’s on campus, which currently stands at 69. One issue that Pancakes had in the past was that it only had 7 active members and through their recruitment on Quad Day, facebook, twitter and their own website they have been able to increase their membership numbers.

Leisure Movement in Philanthropy:

Organizations such as Pancakes for Poverty are beginning to redefine yet another aspect of weisure. Weisure, the concept of work and leisure becoming interchangeable, is starting to become more of a selling point for these philanthropic organizations. People are beginning to love to “work” or volunteer and spend time laughing and hanging out with friends.

Synopsis:

Through my interview with Alex Ronning and an involvement with Pancakes for Poverty on a personal level I have learned about how philanthropic organizations and the concepts of leisure interact. As Pancakes for Poverty conducts its first sale of the year people will come together to “work” making and selling pancakes, however to most it is not work, but the fulfillment of a burning passion. The laughter, outrageous 80’s music, smiles and jokes coming from the Pancake stand prove that serving is a new form of leisure. Leisure for centuries has been viewed as sitting around watching television, relaxing and enjoying oneself away from anything work related, but its organizations like Pancakes that are starting to redefine leisure. Ronning said, “I wanted to see kids fight for a cause they believed in.” and “I want our kids to get involved and love doing it.” Serving others and each other is a concepts that Ronning’s Pancakes for Poverty group really promotes and will be a trend that continues for years to come in the field of leisure. Its an absolute blast to hang out with these people and its even sweeter that your really helping people out!

Kevin's Sports Management Agency - U of I Athletic Department

The Athletic Department of the University of Illinois boasts of 19 Division I teams; 9 men's teams and 10 girl's teams. The athletic department also has 16 top notch athletic facilities for these various teams. The most recognizable of the facilities are the football field; Memorial Stadium, and the basketball stadium; Assembly Hall. Illinois' Athletic Department is part of the Big Ten Conference and is one of the premier sports programs in the nation. It serves a crucial role in leisure as a sports management agency. People love to watch and play sports as form of leisure.

Background

The athletic department's mission statement is: "To have the highest quality athletic program in all sports that allows the University of Illinois teams to compete for championships in the Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association." The department has been quite successful in this goal. The "Fighting Illini" have won 25 national championships and numerous Big Ten titles in every sport since 1900. The University joined the Big Ten in 1896 and was one of the original schools in the conference. The athletic department has become one of the University's main sources of revenue as sports have become so popular in recent history. Football and Men's Basketball, the premier programs, earned $76.6 million in 2007-2008 school year.

Employment Opportunities

There are many opportunities for employment in the athletic department. There are the obvious positions as coaches and trainers that deal directly with the athletes themselves. But there are also positions available as an athletic administrator (i.e. Athletic Director), there are positions in the business office (accountants, etc.), ticket sales, marketing, event management and facility management. There are also various internships available to current students to get their foot in the door.

Trends
One disturbing trend in the world of college athletics is the decline in attendance. Many people now have college football and basketball television packages. It is cheaper and more convenient for people to stay and watch games in HD in the comfort of their own living room. Who would want to spend hundreds of dollars to go sit in the freezing cold when there is a better, easier alternative?

This is the problem that athletic departments all over the country have to deal with. Some solutions are increasing marketing efforts and bettering the fans' game day experience. Athletic departments are looking to improve their overall product and get people back in the seats.

Leisure in Sport Management

The definition of leisure in the sports industry is spending free time with friends or family playing or watching sports. Sports in America are more popular than ever and many people just kick back on the couch after a long day at work and turn a game on. Or, some people may spend their free time playing a game of pick up basketball with their friends. Sports have become a great way to socialize, spend time with friends, and enjoy life.

Overview
Overall I think that a job in the athletic department would be a good job. I love sports and hope to get a job in the industry after I graduate. I do think though, that one con to a job in the athletic department would be long work hours. There could also be a great deal of stress involved. Expectations to win here at Illinois are huge. Illinois is in the highly competitive Big Ten Conference, and the pressure is always on to compete. On the other hand it would be great to get free tickets and work directly with the athletes. I would enjoy a job with the Illinois Athletic department.

Synopsis:

Overall, the Shedd Aquarium is a great place to relax and let your mind venture off onto some of the many wonders of the world. It is supported by a large group of employees who enjoy their work and create a fun environment. Some of the pros of a career at this agency include you getting a chance to leisure everyday! You are there in a social environment, talking to and meeting new people every day. You can enjoy the viewing of not only underwater life, but a total of 1,500 species in all! The only con that I see in a career at this agency is the amount of dedication and hard work that goes into maintaining its reputation. But if you ask me, the pros out weight the cons, which is a good thing. If you enjoying doing a job, you shouldn’t mind the hard work that comes along with it.
